1. INTRODUCE A NEW TOY
A new toy can add some excitement during the day while your dog is home alone.
A tough chew toy that can’t be torn apart while you’re gone is best, just in case your dog likes to gobble things up. Or a squeaky soft toy that they can chase around and hearing the squeak will keep them happy for hours.
Also rotate the toys, after a day or two, put one toy away so it’s out of sight and mind, and bring out a new one for them to try. This will keep all of your pet’s toys fresh and exciting and also save them from being chewed to death in a week!
2. GIVE YOUR DOG A BLOCK OF ICE
Place your dog’s treats or other suitable food in an ice-cream container, fill with water, and freeze. Alternatively freeze a toy like a knotted rope in some water. As the ice melts, toys and treats become available for your dog.
Always remember to make sure the block of ice already has some water around it so that when you first give it to your pet, they can start to play straight away by drinking the water and then as the ice melts keep going.
Also try frozen peanut butter. Dogs love peanut butter so also freeze some in a toy overnight and when you go out bring it out of the fridge and they will lick and suck there way through the frozen peanut butter that is in the toy. This can keep them occupied for hours.
Mix it up a bit as well: frozen peanut butter one day, frozen treats another day , have a break and then repeat.
3. RUN OFF THAT ENERGY.
Possibly one of the easiest solutions to stop your pet being naughty will you are at work or study or out is to increase the amount of exercise your dog gets, especially before you leave.
The common underlying cause of why dogs have destructive behavior problems at home when no owners are around are full of unused energy. The more your dog is using his energy in acceptable ways such as through exercise and training, the less chance he is going to become destructive when you are gone and he is bored.
4. WATER, WATER, WATER.
Making sure your dog has enough water for the day while no one is home is very important. Look at using a water dispenser that has running water constantly going into their bowl. Many dogs love water and the running water of a fountain can create a diversion for your dog plus keep them hydrated.
5. GET YOUR DOG A FURRY FIREND.
Adopting or rescuing another dog as a friend to your furry friend helps both animals. You give your pet someone to socialise with during the day and you save a life. This obviously depends on the size of your house & your circumstances, but a new house mate can ease you dogs anxiety plus add hours of family fun with an extra pet in the house.
